Doctors and Staff

Dr. Greg Matt grew up in a small town in Iowa and was inspired to become a veterinarian by the care and compassion displayed by his family’s veterinarian.  Following graduation from Iowa State University, then Iowa State University School of Veterinary Medicine with his D.V.M., he joined a busy practice in Dallas, Texas with a large caseload. There he developed extensive experience in internal medicine and surgery. In 1985 he moved to Houston, Texas purchasing Mt. Houston Animal Clinic. Then in 1995 he purchased Beechnut Animal Clinic located in southwest Houston.

Dr. Matt strongly believes in staying current in the ever-changing world of veterinary medicine, and continues to practice on the leading edge- whether it be medical protocol, pharmacology or technology .He particularly enjoys tackling difficult to diagnose cases and is always searching for new technology to support his growing staff of doctors.  In Dr. Matt's own words, “The most rewarding aspect of having practices with multiple doctors is you get to surround yourself and work with incredibly intelligent, compassionate, and talented people. I honestly feel honored that they have chosen to work with me.”

When Dr. Matt isn’t running from clinic to clinic, he’s running from his teenage son's lacrosse games to his eleven year old daughter's basketball games with his wife Robin.  When he finally gets a chance to relax you can find him ocean kayaking, boating, playing electric guitar, scuba diving or building computers.

The family pets are Fisher a rescued golden retriever, Champ a local shelter dog, and Gus-Gus a black bear hamster. And on a regular basis there is an extra golden retriever hanging out with the gang. The Matt’s are a foster home for the Golden Beginnings Golden Retriever Rescue Group.

Dr.Gabriel Ferrer was born and raised in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico.  It was there that he became interested in animals at a very young age. After spending many years as a volunteer at a small animal clinic in San Juan while attending elementary and high school, he decided to pursue the exciting veterinary profession. Because there is not a veterinary school in Puerto Rico, he left his Caribbean Island and came to the United States to pursue his dream.

He graduated from Louisiana State University in 2002 with an undergraduate degree in Animal Science. In 2006 he graduated from Michigan State University with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M) degree. After finishing veterinary school, he decided to get more experience in the veterinary field and finished a one-year medical and surgical rotating internship at The Ohio State University.  During his internship year he became very interested in veterinary dermatology and came to Houston to do a specialized dermatology internship at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists. He loved Houston so much that he decided to stay and started to work as a Relief Veterinarian in several veterinary clinics in Houston before becoming the new member of Mt. Houston Animal Clinic. His fluient Spanish has been a big benefit to the practice. He really enjoys veterinary dermatology and he is planning in becoming a board-certified veterinary dermatologist in the future.

When Dr. Ferrer is not at Mt Houston, he is either running at memorial park training for his next race, playing beach or indoor volleyball, attempting to play golf or just enjoying the beautiful city of Houston.

Dr. Anna McMurrey  is a Houston native.  Growing up in Alief, she knew from a young age that she wanted to be a veterinarian.  Her parents tolerated having “a zoo” in their home, which at one point in time consisted of over 15 animals.  She attended Texas A&M University undergraduate school as well as Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine.  After an internship in Boston, she was hired on to Beechnut Animal Hospital in April of 2008.

Her love of veterinary medincine comes not only from the joy she gets out of being with animals, but the knowledge that she can help ease pain, cure diseases and generally help the lives of her patients as well as the people who care for them.  She also loves having a challenging and yet very rewarding career.  In her free time, she enjoys scuba diving, traveling, reading and is currently planning her wedding with her fiance, Danny.

Maria Garcia is our Senior Veterinary Technician and has worked at Mt. Houston Animal Clinic since 2000.  Prior to joining the clinic staff, she worked for two years as an Emergency Medical Technician.  Maria is our go-to person at the clinic.  If you call us and need something done, chances are Maria can do it for you.  Her particular interests include emergency/critical care medicine (must be that EMT background!) and surgery.

Maria grew up in Houston and is the second oldest of seven children in her family. She has three dogs: Sachi, Plata, and Gucci, and one cat, Mr. Binx.   In her free time, Maria enjoys spending time with her family, including her daughter, Zariah, and her husband Zack.  She also enjoys playing outdoor sports, especially basketball.

Denise Messina is a Receptionist and has worked at Mt. Houston Animal Clinic since September of 2004.  Before joining us, she worked for eight years as a hairstylist and a short time at another veterinary clinic.  Denise is the most likely voice you’ll hear on the other end of the phone when you call us to set an appointment, ask a question, or just say hello.  Denise has a great rapport with our clients and will always go the extra mile to ensure your experience with us is a pleasant one.

Denise is a Houston native.  She has two daughters, Lauren and Madison, four dogs and one cat. In her free time, Denise enjoys fishing, boating, and spending time with family.
